What is a Chobi Rug?

The term “Chobi” is derived from the Farsi word “chob,” which translates to wood. This name is a nod to the natural, vegetable dyes used in the creation of these rugs, often resulting in colors reminiscent of a wood’s hues. Chobi rugs are a type of hand-knotted rug, traditionally made in Afghanistan. They are renowned for their high-quality wool, often hand-spun, and the meticulous attention to detail in their designs.

A variant of the Chobi rug is the Chobi kilim. While the term “kilim” is used to describe a variety of flat-woven rugs, a Chobi kilim specifically refers to a flat-woven rug that shares the same color palette and aesthetic as a traditional Chobi rug. Like their pile-woven counterparts, Chobi kilims are admired for their neutral color schemes and intricate designs.
Whether you’re drawn to the plush texture of a traditional Chobi rug or the flat, tapestry-like weave of a Chobi kilim, these rugs offer a timeless appeal that can enhance any interior.
Chobi rugs have a rich history rooted in the regions of Afghanistan and Pakistan. These countries are renowned for their long-standing tradition of rug weaving, a skill passed down through generations. The artisans who create these rugs have honed their craft over many years, resulting in the beautiful, high-quality Chobi rugs we see today.

While Chobi rugs share some similarities with other types of rugs, they also have distinct characteristics that set them apart. For instance, Persian rugs, another type of hand-knotted rug, are known for their intricate designs and vibrant colors. However, Chobi rugs are recognized for their more subdued, neutral color palette, which is a result of the natural dyes used in their creation.

Our thoroughly trained techs do all of our fringing and take great care to achieve the best results. This includes ensuring the lines of thread that are run through the rug are invisible and that our fringe matches the rug’s foundation exactly (unless a customer wants all new fringe of a different material and color).

Chobi Rub Binding

When the binding on your Chobi rug becomes damaged, it is important to schedule the repair services as soon as possible to prevent further unraveling. At Kairos Upholstery, our weavers match the binding method of the new binding to the old binding. We also color match the thread. We can get hundreds of shades to ensure the closest match possible.
Our weavers begin by overcasting, which is when the raw edges are stitched to prevent further unraveling, then they sew in the new binding, matching the original work. If your Chobi rug needs a completely new binding done, meaning there is no old binding to match, you may look at our examples to decide which binding method you prefer. Tips For Maintaining a Chobi Rug

Chobi rugs are cherished treasures in homes and businesses. Follow these expert tips to keep your exquisite pieces vibrant and beautiful for years to come.

Owning a Chobi rug is not the same as other pieces of furniture in a home. Chobi rugs can be worth thousands of Rands and carry sentimental value. A Chobi rug can be an investment, a pleasure to own or a family heirloom; and it is most definitely the responsibility of the owner to understand relevant rug care, cleaning, and maintenance of their rug. When treated well and kept in the right conditions, a Chobi rug will be passed down through generations and enjoy a long life whilst retaining its’ vibrancy and vigour.
Here are tips on how to take care of Chobi rugs:

Prevent Moisture

A Chobi rug, just like any other, is susceptible to moisture build up from spillages and the atmosphere. Whilst it a good idea for a rug to be placed in a well aired area, it is also a good idea to properly air a rug twice a year to make sure that you do not have to experience that damp rug smell that leads to mould and mildew and damage from a host of insects.
To air your rug, hang it up outside on a dry, sunny day (preferably with a breeze). The air will help to dissipate moisture and remove any odours that might have built up in the rug.

Rotate Chobi Rugs

Chobi rugs will be affected by wear and tear if they are in high traffic areas and fading because of atmospheric influence and footfall. To avoid this, a Chobi rug should be rotated every few months. If there is any furniture on top of the rug, this will eliminate crushing of fibres. If possible, furniture on top of rugs should be moved In between rotations.

Vacuuming Chobi Rugs

The build-up of dirt and particles will dull a Chobi rug as well as give nesting opportunities to moths and other unwanted creatures. We recommend vacuuming Chobi rugs weekly (or more regularly if required). As well as this, the rug can be turned over every month and vacuumed on the backside too. This will help to dislodge any remaining dirt or particles, discourage nesting, and help to lift the pile of the rug. If there is any furniture that rests on the Chobi rug, this should be lifted off so that the rug can be vacuumed underneath. Ideally, the rug would then be rotated to avoid wear and tear in specific areas.

Keep Out Of Sunlight

Chobi rugs are made from sheep’s wool and cotton. These natural fibres are more susceptible to colour fading by sunlight than other fibres. Whilst positioning a beautiful Chobi rug in direct sunlight might carry aesthetic appeal, the more sunlight that a Chobi rug is exposed to, the quicker it will fade. As well as colour fade, the UV rays within sunlight dry out the fibres making them brittle which will lead to tearing, augmented by any form of contact. The ideal solution to this problem would be to place your Chobi rug in a shaded area. If the rug must be kept somewhere that enjoys natural sunlight too, try to close curtains or blinds at times when the sun would fall on the rug or consider having the windows treated to eliminate UV rays.

Clean Spills Immediately

There is a myriad of things that can be spilt on a Chobi rug in a home. From coffee to wine to animal urine and more: the method of caring for a rug will differ depending on what has been split.
In general, any liquid should be removed as much as possible by being blotted with white paper towel (do not use paper towel with any colouring) and the remaining area flushed with clean water to dilute any staining. The rug should then be blotted again to remove as much moisture as possible and hung outside in fresh air to expedite drying if possible.
Urine should be treated with white vinegar and water as the components of urine can affect the composition of the dyes that are in the fibres.
As a rule, do not scrub your Chobi rug to remove a stain or mark. You run the risk of making it worse and damaging the rug fibres.
That said, if the thought of caring for an expensive family heirloom concerns you, then it is always best to contact a specialist Chobi rug cleaner and repair expert and let them take care of the rug. This is a sensible and well-placed investment, especially for more valuable pieces.

Use Under Rug Padding

Chobi rugs, especially on wooden floors, can move or ‘creep’ when people walk over them. To prevent this, use a rug underlay which not only provides stability for a rug but also offers a protective layer between the rug and hard flooring. This layer will protect the underside fibres from wear and tear and improve air flow under the ug which will help to prevent issues arising from damp. It will also protect your floor underneath from staining from erroneous spillages.

Get It Professionally Deep Cleaned

Chobi rugs are works of art as well as pieces of furniture. As such, they need to be cared for and treated accordingly. As well as this, whilst there are plenty of preventative measures that can be taken to care for Chobi rugs, accidents also happen which oftentimes require a more professional level of intervention. As previously mentioned, if your Chobi rug is of a high value or a family heirloom, it is worth having your rug collected by a trusted specialist who can undertake whatever repair, cleaning or renovation that is required so that you can enjoy your Chobi rug for generations to come.

Yes, chobi rugs are mainly hand-knotted with 100% wool. They are also dyed and not just printed in bright colors, so they will last for a long time without losing their vibrancy. Before discussing different ways of maintaining a rug, it is important to mention that even though a Chobi and other handmade rugs are a work of art, it is made to be used and walked on. Traditionally, handmade rugs, especially in the Middle East, were the only type of furniture; people slept, ate, and sat on them. Older rugs are expected to look worn. With usage, as the top layers of pile (in most cases wool) break, the pile looks shinier and smoother, and with light exposure the colors look more harmonious. With proper use, handmade rugs generally become more valuable. Remember that handmade rugs are not easily damaged, so enjoy your handmade rug without any worries.
1. Follow the instruction below and you will enjoy your rug for generations: Every two to three years clean the rugs professionally. It is important to have it washed professionally because as the rug is used, dust, dirt and broken fiber get into the foundation.
2. In case of water spill, dry the wet spot immediately with a hairdryer on warm temperature. Try to dry both sides of the rug if possible.
3. Vacuum or sweep your rug regularly. Use suction in the direction of the pile. Be very careful so that the fringes do not get pulled or sucked in by the vacuum cleaner.
4. For old stains, take the rug to a professional handmade rug retailer. Do not try to clean old stains yourself.
5. Rotate your rug 180 degrees every few months depending on the extent of traffic. Rotation can be helpful since all parts of a rug can be exposed to light equally so that the colors fade evenly. When colors are exposed to the sun evenly, they become harmonious and the rug ages nicely, but if different parts of the rug receive unequal amount of sun exposure, overtime, one side might look over faded and one side too bright. Also, rotation can distribute the traffic evenly as well. All parts of the rug should be exposed to equal amount of traffic so that the pile wears evenly.

Permanent wear and tear can be avoided by occasionally rotating the Chobi rug so that it is subjected to stress at different points.

Understanding the reasons for your Chobi rug being chewed by a dog can help you address the issue effectively. Dogs may chew on rugs due to teething, anxiety, or many other reasons. By identifying the root cause, you can prevent such incidents in the future. Here are some possible reasons that your dog chews your rug, and if you’re dealing with rug damage caused by your furry friend, consider our professional rug pet stain removal services to restore your rug’s condition.
Teething: Puppies tend to chew on objects, especially during their teething phase. This way, they can alleviate the discomfort in their gums. Your rug might have been a convenient target for your dog to relieve their teething pain.
Boredom: Dogs that lack mental and physical stimulation may have destructive behaviors like chewing on rugs. They may do so out of boredom or to entertain themselves.
Separation anxiety: Dogs with separation anxiety may exhibit this behavior as well. They chew on rugs as a response to feeling stressed or anxious when left alone. Chewing on items, including rugs, can be a coping mechanism for them.
Lack of appropriate chew toys: Your dog may not have access to suitable chew toys. So, they may chew on household objects, including your rug.

To prevent dogs chewing your Chobi rugs, here are some strategies you can try:
Provide appropriate chew toys: Give your dog a variety of chew toys specifically designed for dogs. These toys should be durable, safe, and interesting to them. Encourage them to chew on these toys by praising and rewarding them when they use them.
Puppy-proof your home: Remove any tempting items from your dog’s reach. Put away shoes, clothing, children’s toys, and other objects your dog may find appealing to chew on. This will help minimize the opportunities for inappropriate chewing.
Supervise and redirect: When you cannot directly supervise your dog, confine them to a safe and dog-proofed area. These areas can be a crate or a gated-off room. When you’re present, keep an eye on your dog and redirect its attention. So, you can catch them chewing on something inappropriate. Offer them an approved chew toy instead and provide positive reinforcement when they engage with it.
Use deterrents: Apply deterrent sprays or substances to objects you want to protect from chewing. These sprays usually have a bitter taste that dogs dislike. So, they can discourage them from chewing on those items. Always choose pet-safe products and follow the instructions carefully.
Exercise and mental stimulation: Ensure your dog receives enough physical and mental stimulation daily. A tired and mentally stimulated dog is less likely to chew on things out of boredom or excess energy.
Training and positive reinforcement: Teach your dog the “leave it” and “drop it” commands. This way, you can redirect their attention and discourage chewing on forbidden items. Consistently reward and praise your dog when they make the right choices and chew on appropriate objects.
Address anxiety or boredom: If your dog’s chewing is rooted in anxiety or boredom, it’s important to address the underlying causes. Consult with a veterinarian or a professional dog trainer for guidance on managing and alleviating these issues.

This is due to the grease content of the wool, as it gives the fabric elasticity.

Chobi rugs are made in Afghanistan. These rugs are typically made from goat wool or sheep’s wool that have geometric patterns all over them with bright and vibrant colors. You can place these rugs in both indoor and outdoor areas.

Yes, chobi rugs are mainly hand-knotted with 100% wool. They are also dyed and not just printed in bright colors, so they will last for a long time without losing their vibrancy. The knot counts are also higher than other rugs on the market. You will love the quality that you can feel with your hands.

There are several types of chobi rugs, made from materials such as silk, bamboo silk, cotton wool. These rugs are vintage and sold at a high price in markets. Some of the chobi silks are oushak, ziegler, which are either woven, or hand knotted making them the perfect showpiece in your house.
