We have mastered the art of repairing rug fringes, as this is normally the first part of Oriental rugs that is damaged.
How Do You Know It's Time for Professional Repair Services?
Minor damage to your rug will often become a major problem if it’s left unattended, so you shouldn’t wait to get repairs for your rugs. Here are some signs your carpet could need repair.
- Stains: Some stains can become large over time, and they’re often hard to remove on your own.
- Wear: Your rug could have thin spots, fraying, or holes.
- Bad smells: Excess moisture can lead to mold and mildew, creating unpleasant musty odours in your home. You’ll need to have your rug cleaned as soon as possible to keep the smell from spreading.
- Allergies or asthma: Mold, dirt, dust, and other contaminants in your rugs can cause allergy or asthma symptoms such as sneezing, runny noses, sore throats, coughing, rashes, or eye irritation.
- Old padding: The padding under your rug can become flattened, uneven, or wrinkled over time.
An old rug: Most rugs last for about 10 years. After that, you may need to get fading, wear, or other problems repaired.
Types of Rug Repairs
Here are some of the most popular types of rug repairs services that we offer:
Re-Fringing
Fringes are often the first part of an oriental rug to show signs of wear. Catching this in the early stages is vital to maintaining the health of your rug, and will usually avoid the need for major mending later on.
The fringe is evidence of the exquisite architecture of your rug. All hand-knotted Oriental rugs are woven on a warp and weft base that forms its foundation. When the weaving process is complete, this foundation is cut from the loom and the excess strands are tied and finished – creating the fringe, or ‘tassel’ as it is commonly known.
When the fringe begins to fray, often because of a slipped stopping stitch that is used to hold it in place, the weft and warp can also come loose and start to erode the pile of the rug. It is very important to halt this process. Similar in nature to the structural repair of a building, in order for the pile of a rug to be maintained, it must have a secure foundation.
Fraying ends and fringes need to be attended to quickly. It is much easier to apply a new stopping stitch to a fraying tassel (identical to what would originally been used to finish the rug or carpet) than it is to rebuild and re-weave sections of the rug which have been allowed to come apart.
This process is called a ‘stop-end’ or a ‘level and secure’ repair, and creates a new fringed end that stops any further deterioration. A relatively simple and straightforward process, we perform this repair kind of repair our many clients.
Complete Moth Repair
The primary culprit of insect damage in Oriental rugs is the carpet moth, Tineola bisselliella. A female moth will lay up to 200 eggs in her short lifetime, and it is these larvae that cause the damage to the fibres of a rug. In their larval state, carpet moths have an appetite for the keratin in the natural fibres of wool and silk, and will happily live in the warmth and dark of the pile, eating what they need in order to grow. The carpet moth is small and unassuming and very often, one does not notice a moth infestation until the damage has been done.
If your rug has been damaged by moths, take heart! Moth damage can be both repaired and prevented. As these animals tend to prefer soiled animal fibre, an important preventative measure is to keep your rug nice and clean. Rugs in storage are particularly vulnerable. The carpet moth prefers both darkness and dirt, and rugs in storage are more vulnerable to damage than rugs in use. It goes without saying that a rug must always be thoroughly cleaned before it is placed in storage.
At the Kairos Upholstery we can repair all levels of moth damage – and regularly return seriously damaged carpets and rugs back to their original condition, meticulously replicating the exact design and weave. If a hole has been made, we will reweave and re-knot, returning the rug to its previously undamaged state. Sometimes this involves building a small hand loom around the damaged areas to apply the necessary tension before the traditional weaving and knotting techniques are applied.
Threadbare, Holes, Tears
We specialise in mending and rebuilding threadbare areas of all oriental and Persian carpets, rugs and runners. Our highly skilled restorers assess each rug as a whole. Composition, colour, and the style in which it was knotted are all taken into account in order to find the right repair method. Following the exact map of the original design they apply new wool, rebuild the pile and strengthen any damaged areas. With the right colours, fibres and style of knot, any threadbare or worn areas are fully restored, returning the rug to its former glory.
A tear in a rug can compromise its foundation, and needs to be carefully attended to before further damage occurs. With this in mind, it is important to remember that the sooner a rug is mended, the easier the repair job will be. Torn warps and wefts are reconstructed before re-knotting the pile, ensuring great care must be taken not to distort the existing structure of the rug.
With the expertise of our craftsmen, holes are also invisibly repaired. A hole in a rug may require the foundations to be re-established. The rug is supported by a frame that provides the necessary tension for repairs to be carried out, also preventing wrinkles or distortions in the foundation from occurring. After this the warp and weft foundation is reconstructed (in either cotton, wool or silk), and the tension required applied, before the pile is re-knotted and the design seamlessly restored.
Threadbare, Holes, Tears
Burns
The wool and silk in handmade rugs is naturally non-flammable – but a hot ember or naked flame can still cause extensive damage. If the wool is singed or the cotton foundations burned, it is important to mend the affected area as soon as possible. Fear not though, almost everything and anything can be restored to its original condition!
We have extensive experience in repairing burn and fire-damaged rugs. From small ember burn holes to large sections needing structural repair, we will exactly match the wool and silk to repair each section damaged.
Please do not assume the worst for fire and burn damaged rugs – in most cases we can restore them. It is worth noting that many of our clients come to us for a second opinion on an insurance write off, when in-fact the rug or carpet concerned can be repaired and returned to its former glory.
Mildew & Rot
Mildew is a fungus, the growth of which can penetrate natural fibres and break them down, producing rot. Both cotton and wool are susceptible to mildew and rot, but cotton (often the foundation of a rug) is especially vulnerable.
When cotton becomes affected by serious mildew and rot, it loses strength and becomes brittle. Signs to look out for are any creaking or cracking sounds when a rug is bent or rolled. If a rug has widespread rot, we usually suggest moving it to a sunlit area free of footfall, where it can be allowed to rest without disturbance.
The ultraviolet rays of sunlight help to destroy mildew. Where rot damage has occurred, we gently clean and then thoroughly dry the affected area. If rot has compromised the foundations of the rug we will reweave and re-knot the damaged sections.
If a rug is being put into storage, we always recommend having the piece cleaned and dried. It is vital that rugs in storage be kept dry. If there is any humidity they will need to be regularly aired in sunlight to prevent any harmful fungal growth.
Antique Repairs and Restoration
Antique Oriental and Persian rug repair and restoration is at the heart of what we do. We are noted for our ability to restore even the most threadbare antique carpets and rugs, reviving colour, concealing holes, repairing sides and fringes and re-piling damaged areas to the seamless specifications of each unique piece.
We enjoy the challenge that comes with large scale projects as well as the precision needed for the small and beautiful. Many of the carpets and rugs that we restore not only have sizeable economic value, but often hold an enormous amount of sentimental value to their custodians.
We understand the need to consider your options, and in order to do so you need to know all you can about the piece in your care. Our service includes a free appraisal of the antique rug or carpet, followed by a comprehensive report on provenance, value, repair schedule, cost and alternative options.
Water and Colour Bleed Repair
Handmade Oriental carpets and rugs are often woven with wool and silk that has been either naturally or synthetically coloured. These dyes have differing levels of colour-fastness, and some may be susceptible to bleeding or colour-run if exposed to excess water or liquid.
Vegetable dyes have traditionally been used in Oriental rug making for centuries. Made from locally gathered plants, they are a link to the landscape that is woven into each piece. The colour tends to fade more quickly with vegetable dyes, creating gently washed tones that are much desired by collectors and designers alike.
There is a difference in whether a colour fades or bleeds, and for the latter we offer a full colour-run correction service for all carpets rugs and runners. We have the ability and expertise to remove almost any level of colour-run – gently lifting the offending dye and then carefully returning the piece to its pre-damaged condition.
Most colour run correction is carried out on either Persian or Afghan rugs and the primary culprit is often the shades of deep red that can leach into white or ivory areas creating a light pink colouring. We carefully remove this excess colour, and then wash the wool or silk back to the purity of its original hue.
Rug Underlay
Oriental carpets and rugs were made to cover floor spaces and provide warmth and comfort under foot. However, they can slide around and provide a potential trip hazard for their owners. Being handmade, they can occasionally change shape over time too, depending on where the they are placed and the concentration of footfall.
Slipping, creeping and shape change can all be eliminated by using a high quality, professional grade underlay. We encourage clients to use underlay after cleaning and repair to protect your reinvigorated carpet or rug. Dust and dirt can become lodged deep into the foundation of the rug, and footfall with no underlay can have an abrasive effect – wearing down the rug at much faster rate than without.
At the Kairos Upholstery we measure, cut and install various qualities of underlays and underfelts for all oriental and Persian carpet, rugs and runners. Please ask get in touch for free advice and to ask a member of the team for more information.
Insurance Repairs
We have extensive experience in providing replacement valuations to a variety of firms and clients in need of our specialist assistance. Whether it’s a quotation needed for an insurance claim, or specialist advice needed for an insurance valuation – we will be able to help.

Advice is always free of charge and without obligation. To speak to someone about how we can help, please contact us to make an appointment.

Vacuuming keeps rugs fairly clean between professional cleanings.
Rotate Rug for Even Wear
Positioning your area rug in a bright and sunlit room will cause fading. However, using blinds or drapes to block direct sunlight will prevent some sun damage. Another option to reduce uneven wear and fading is to rotate your area rug annually.
Keep Heavy Furniture Away from Area Rugs
Placing heavy furniture on area rugs may crush the fibers and create dents. However, using furniture coasters will help prevent depressions in the rug.
Invest in a Rug Pad

Stay Away From Do-It-Yourself Area Rug Cleaning

Moreover, applying water to stains is not recommended. Dyes may run and bleed, discoloring the rug and damaging the floor underneath.
Professionally Clean Area Rugs

Frequently Asked Questions
If I’m not using my rug, how should I store it
Persian rugs are best stored rolled up. If Persian rugs are folded, they may become creased, pleated, or otherwise deformed.
How do I treat and remove stains?
It depends on the type of stain. If the rug gets wet or spilt upon, use a white cloth to blot out and absorb excess water. Roll up the rug with the cloth inside and squeeze the water from the fiber. Repeat this process as necessary in order to remove excess water, taking the backside of the rug into account. Should any billowing or molding occur, contact us for professional cleaning. Stains from drinks such as coffee, beer, or soda can be treated by dabbing the area with room-temperature water and a cloth. Again, if any residue remains, let us take care of it!
How do I prevent mite and insect damage?
Gently vacuum your rug once a week to remove dust, which can attract small insects. Remember to vacuum the backside of the rug as well.Â
How long will my rug last?
One aspect of handmade Persian rugs that many collectors and enthusiasts enjoy is their general hardiness. With hundreds of knots per square inch, the fabric fibers are tightly wound and rarely unravel. Depending on how much foot traffic the rug encounters, the quality of the rug and the care it receives, handmade Persian rugs can last well over a hundred years. If the rug experiences foot traffic, it is preferable that guests not wear hard shoes, and especially not high heels, which can damage the rug’s knots and fibers. Additionally, try to keep your rug out of direct sunlight, which can cause fading and even deterioration of the material. If your rug is in direct sunlight, be sure to rotate the rug frequently, at least once a month.
How do you clean your clients’ rugs?
Firstly, all of our rugs are delicately hand washed in order preserve the integrity of the natural dyes and fabrics in them. Because every rug is unique, our cleaning routine varies, but generally we first inspect the rug to determine rug damage, if any. Then, we’ll remove any dry particles or dirt, using a variety of traditional techniques. Before using any cleaning agent, we test the color strength, and use a special shampoo and/or special cleaning solution. After this, the rugs are washed and rinsed on both sides, and left to dry naturally.
What kind of rug repairs are done?
Rug repair services can restore carpet areas that have been destroyed through fire, animals, insects, wear and tear, cuts and similar damage. Rugs can be rewoven and re-piled, reproducing original designs using wool dyed in similar colors. Different sized holes and cuts can be patched. Rug repair services also specialize in edge and end unraveling, repair of worn fringes, reinforcement of weak and separated areas, overcasting of worn rug ends, improving pre-existing repairs and altering the size of the rug.
How often should I have my rugs cleaned?
All carpets should be cleaned every 12 to 24 months if you are thinking of hiring a professional cleaner. Otherwise, it should be vacuumed at least twice a week. For high traffic households with pets and children, it is recommended to get your carpets cleaned anywhere between three and seven times a week.
My rug is damaged by smoke, what should I do?
Smoke damage can sometimes be silent but is extremely hazardous for you and your children’s health. Without proper cleaning, carpets and rugs will emit supremely harmful and dangerous fumes, lasting for several months. It is additionally harmful to elderly with lung disorders and weak immune systems.
Heavily smoke damaged rugs require both washing and professional deodorizing with specific odor removing chemicals. Small amounts of direct fire damage burns can be re-knotted and heavy ash and soot can also be washed by professional rug washers and should be done as soon as possible.
Moths have eaten my rug, what should I do?
Many fine rugs are made up of fine natural fibers such as wool which lose their natural oily properties and become drier making them easier for moths to eat than a new rug. Firstly you should vacuum both the front and back of all your rugs and place them in an area with direct sunlight. The ultraviolet rays will kill the eggs that are hiding in your carpet.
After that, you should sanitize or wash your rug or bring it in to get washed by a professional. Small moth-eaten areas can often be rewoven, and large areas can be shaved and sheared to minimize the damage. Different techniques including dying can also be used to restore damaged areas. Getting your rug treated chemically isn’t a very wise thing to do because it can end up damaging your rug piece more.
Do I need to put a pad under my rug?
While a carpet pad is not necessary to protect the flooring from the area rug, carpet padding will add life to your Oriental rug by supplying a cushion in which to absorb stress and continual foot traffic. Carpet padding will also prevent area rugs from slipping, help the rug keep its shape and wear more evenly and will add a softer feel when stepping on the rug. A properly sized professional pad will extend the life and beauty of your treasured area rug.
What types of rugs do you repair?
We repair all types of hand woven rugs and machine made rugs.
